Veggietales: The Video Game, often shortened to Veggietales, is a 1996 side-scrolling platform video game released by originally developed and published by Sega, exclusively for the Sega Genesis. It is based upon the children's animated direct-to-video series created by Big Idea and draws inspiration from Where's God When I'm S-Scared?, God Wants Me to Forgive Them?!?, Are You My Neighbor?, Rack, Shack, and Benny, Dave and the Giant Pickle, and The Toy That Saved Christmas. The game was planned to be ported to the Sega CD, but it was replaced with Are You My Neighbor? (Sega CD). The game was met with mixed reception from critics.
Larry scares Bob, who then ends up losing pages from their Bible. In a rushed effort, Bob and Larry both must find all pages of their Bible, retelling 6 stories on the way.
Veggietales: The Video Game is a side-scrolling platform game where players take control of the titular duo across multiple levels based on other Veggietales videos in order to return all the pages that they lost from the Bible as the main objective. The levels featured in the game, though linear in nature, are large and populated with multiple obstacles, enemies and environmental hazards, involving the player to traverse the stage by running, jumping, climbing, swinging, throwing objects or dodging enemies while later levels become more maze-like and exploratory, making the player take different routes to reach the end and a boss must be fought to progress further.
Bob is able to attack enemies up close or throw objects at them, however, Larry can jump on enemies similar to Mario. Enemies consist of ghosts, mini pickles, water buffalos, chocolate bunnies, and toys among others. All levels also contain beneficial items and weapon ammunition to be collected among other secrets to be found. If the player is defeated, you can respawn on the nearest checkpoint reached but once all lives are lost, the game is over, though players have the option of resuming progress by loading their saved game via password into the last level reached.
Countertop Craze - The first level is in the kitchen, which means that you must navigate the countertop, avoiding sinks, and different evil fruits. There is no boss.
Biblical Backyard - The backyard is full of different challenges. From the picket fence to the clothesline and electrical wires, Bob and Larry must climb onto the roof to collect the next page. The boss is a large squirrel that throws acorns at you. After throwing five acorns, he will count them, giving you the perfect chance to attack him.
New in Town - Bob and Larry must explore a huge apartment building which is where the page is. This is done via flag polls and window ledges to get in. The boss is a worker of the building, who will drop buckets of water onto the floor to hit you. You must climb onto the wires he is on and then attacks the boss.
Junior's Closet - The enemies in this stage include ghosts and closet monsters that you could find. You must explore the closet to find the next page. The boss is Frankencelery, who breaks parts of the floor. To defeat Frankencelery, you must jump on his head several times.
Friend or Foe - Bob and Larry must explore many bridges that connect through the forests. The enemies in this stage include beavers, crocodiles, and skunks. The boss is once again a large squirrel.
Some Gourds Must Be Crazy - Bob and Larry must explore a large spaceship and bring Jimmy and Jerry to the escape pods to save the USS Applepies. You must have collected the page in this stage before bringing Jimmy and Jerry. There is no boss.
A Not-So-Lucky Lagoon - The enemies in this stage include piranhas, sharks, and fish. You must explore the island (and later the lagoon) to find the next page. The boss is a large piranha, who spits blue balls at you. To defeat the piranha, you must jump on his head several times.
Veggies in a Pickle - In this level, Bob and Larry must bring food to Dave's brothers at the Israelite camp. The boss is Goliath, who acts similarly like Frankencelery and breaks parts of the floor. You must jump on his head several times to defeat him.
Off into the Factory - Enemies (of course) include chocolate bunnies and toys. Bob and Larry must explore a large factory, full of conveyor belts, trucks to fly in, and lots of different paths to find the final boss and get the final page. The final boss is Mr. Nezzer. To defeat him, you must jump on his head while avoiding his workers, who try to fly trucks into you.
- Off into the Factory is known to not have a level password, and to instead lead to the first part of the stage.
