Plot (1999-2010)[]
The first opening begins with the opening credits appearing over a “white void” background with the following text:
- Big Idea Productions Presents
- VeggieTales (the show's logo)
- Created by Phil Vischer and Mike Nawrocki
Bob the Tomato and Larry the Cucumber talk offscreen while the credits fade in and out onscreen. The conversation consists of Bob and Larry figuring out how to perform the theme song. Bob suggests that Larry play it on a guitar, but Larry reminds him that he doesn't have any hands. Bob then ambiguously suggests another unnamed instrument, but Larry refuses because he thinks it will make him look silly. Once Bob reminds him that they’re doing this for the kids watching, Larry agrees to perform the song. Larry then pops his head into view from the left side of the screen with a large sousaphone, finally revealing the instrument alluded to before. He smiles at the viewers, hops to the center of the white void, and finally begins playing the intro of the song (with a couple mistakes here and there).
What follows is Bob hopping into frame, singing the song and swaying along with his cucumber friend. After Bob finishes his first verse, he leans into the camera with a big, toothy grin says his iconic line, “Have we got a show for you”. Larry leans into view from behind Bob and nodding his head with a smile.
It then transitions to a clip montage played over an up-tempo chorus of male and females voices (Lisa Vischer, Phil Vischer and Kurt Heinecke, respectively). The montage features clips from the show, followed by three refrains of the chorus. At the end of each refrain, it cuts from the clip montage to a shot of Archibald Asparagus, Lisa Asparagus, Mike Asparagus and Junior Asparagus joining Bob and Larry in the white void. The tempo increases with each refrain.
The song gains new lyrics and three solos sung by Bob, Junior and Larry, respectively. The new verses are now sung over the refrains from before, turning those refrains into backing vocals.
After more clips are played, it transitions to the bridge, leading to the end of the song where we see the Veggies altogether in the white void exclaiming "It’s time for VeggieTales!", followed by lots of confetti flowers falling over them as they sing. As the song finally ends, Larry runs out of breath while playing his sousaphone and faints. He plays one final bum note, which blows some confetti flowers out of the sousaphone’s bell. All the Veggies look at the camera and smile as children are heard laughing from offscreen.
